Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right

September 7, 2010

A Christian group known as the Dove World Outreach Center plans to commemorate September 11th by burning a Quran. It kind of struck me as odd that of all things, a Christian group would sponsor such an event. After all, wasn't it Jesus who said "turn the other cheek?" Wasn't Jesus all about peace?

That prompted me to ask: would Jesus burn a Quran?

I doubt he would.

General Petraeus says it will ultimately hurt the troops, and I agree. What good will burning the Quran do other than piss off the world's Muslim community? What does this hateful act do but breed more hate? I learned as a child that two wrongs don't make a right; that's still true today.

It would be nice if the rest of world could see that not all Americans are like these nut jobs, but that's asking a lot, seeing as how so many Americans can't see that see that most Muslims aren't like al-Qaeda.

People compare the burning of the Quran to the burning of the American flags in Muslim countries. And, as we permit the burning of the flag in our country as an expression of free speech, so we should permit the burning of the Quran. And that is true; they have every right to burn the Quran. I just wish they had the common decency not to.

There are 1.6 Billion Muslims around the world and the 2.5 million Muslims here in the United States. You can't tell me that all of them hate America and support violence. I've met Muslims; many of my friends and neighbors are Muslim. I've read the Quran. I have to ask how many other have. I certainly have to wonder if the Christian nutcases who advocate the burning of a spiritual text have.

Nine years ago, nineteen guys with a grudge and box cutters stirred up this entire climate of fear and hate. The more we play into it, the more they win.

I, for one, am not going to give them the satisfaction.
