| What is DXing? Well, basically, it's listening to stations from
very far away. All you need is a shortwave radio, and you can listen
for stations broadcasting from all over the world. I actually find it fascinating to learn to about other cultures. Listening to these broadcasts allows me to get a glimpse of their view of the world, as well as the opportunity to learn about their customs, their language, and their music. There are also some very interesting stations out there. Some belong to clandestine revolutionary groups, others are pirate stations offering counterculture programs, and others spout propaganda. Then, there are the occasional numbers stations, which are unknown transmissions that just read off strings of numbers. These numbers stations are believed to be used to communicate with spies deep within enemy countries. If you are interested in DXing, all you need is a shortwave radio. I recommend also a copy of the latest Passport to World Band Radio, which you can pick up at any bookstore. Actually, if you want to check it out, you can listen to many of the other broadcasts over the Internet (I provide links to the programs I receive on my log page) and you can find guides to what's on at many DX web sites. My goal is to try and see how many countries I can pick up on my radio. I keep a log of the stations I have received, along with a review of the programs I have heard on them.
